What isDBHDigitalBrillianceHourDigital Brilliance Hour?

Digital Brilliance Hour(DBH) is a STEAM(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) after-school program designed to provide teens with the opportunities to get access to industry standard skills related to STEAM. The students receive training and implementation by interacting with professionals for real world experience to give them an upper hand to be better prepared for life after high school.

What happens in DBH?

Students will be participating in fun, interactive training related to game development and music production. Students will be taught step by step instructions on how to create both, eventually ending the course by officially releasing and showcasing their own products to the public through a release party. 

What is the age range?

Ages 12- 19, Grades 7th - 12th

What happens in Music Production?

  • Students create their own professional music album from scratch.
  • Students learn how to create their own background music/beats from scratch.
  • Students go to a professional studio to record their own expressions for their songs.
  • Students plan and execute all needed for the album. This involves the single, music video for that single, and business marketing.
  • Students shoot a professional music video for their single
  • Students present the album to the public through the release party
  • Album is released on standard music mediums like Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, .etc.

DBH has taught100+ students since the beginning.

I was able to learn how to develop songs on Bandlab and become familiar with the program, and get more confident in sampling songs. I created three songs to contribute to our album, and I had a lot more if I needed more. I didn't really expect anything coming into the class but I learned a lot and I'd like to take it again.

I did learn how to make a background for a stage. I learned how to make a background for an intro and I also learned how to make character models. I was able to make sure there were no bugs in the game and if there was a bug I was able to report it. I do want to learn more coding.

I learned how to build more characters and how to add sound to them. Different things with characters. The way I contributed was by helping out the characters and adding more things to the characters. My job was development so that means I would have to code stuff,

I started working with my piano for making different sounds and learned a bunch of different music stuff that I didn't know. I already knew classical music stuff but this was an addition. I learned what plug-ins were, arpeggio and chord progressions too. I gave a bit of good feedback while we were working with mixes and using the loops to see what would work best. What I'm hoping to learn next time is how to use a sample from classical music or a different sound and add drums and bass to it because that's what I had problems with.

During the class session, I felt like I learned many things in class. One of the main things was just learning the concepts of knowing how to flip samples and using a sample and making a sample into your own as well as making your own melodies and making your own music rather than using peoples other music.

Ive been able to learn how to develop and create characters going through git bash and cmt that I had to use to be able to create transitions for the sonic character. The way I contributed is the sonic, the transition to the super sonic transformation. The teachers covered everything I wanted to learn.

I learned how to do alot of new stuff on the computer. I learned how to make a game basically. I remember how to make character animations. I think I contributed good to the game. My job was to play the game and tell the team what was wrong and needs to be fixed about it.

I learned the basics of game development and game engine during this session. The way I feel I was able to contribute to ogres mayhem was helping to create the stages and the hit boxes for the characters. My duties were creating the stage intros for stages 4-6, updating the wiki with new transformation information and adding physics to super sonic.

I learned how to use Audacity. And even though I didn't learn how to do new things, the stuff that I knew was improved upon so I'm more skilled in all those areas. I feel like i was able to do a lot of things with my skills. For example with the adult Gon character, I was able to pick up a lot more jobs than before because I have more experience now so I was able to get a lot more done. I was working with the character models and sometimes the stage but mainly the character models.
